Anna Scott
Psychodynamic Counsellor
Most couples who contact us have been living with issues that seemed impossible to resolve. Over time a sense of distance has taken hold. Conversations have become circular and repeat endlessly without resolution. Often, both partners have reached a limit and feel uncertain about whether it is still possible to find a way forward.
In our work together, the focus is on understanding what is really happening between you. Rather than introducing techniques, we focus on the relationship and pay close attention to how you communicate as a couple. It's a creative space, where all aspects of how you relate, the language you use, the assumptions you make, the expectations you bring, are thought about and talked through. Conflict and misunderstandings become an endless repetition of old patterns of relating that can make you feel progress is out of reach. These patterns often hold the key to unmet needs and undeveloped parts of ourselves which the relationship is bringing into focus. As we gain more insight into what is playing out in our relationship the meaning of these conflicts can begin to change and be understood in different ways.
A psychodynamic approach recognises that relationship patterns are rarely confined to the present. What feels most difficult in the other can often connect to earlier experiences, frequently rooted in family life. Bringing this into awareness does not resolve things instantly, but it can change how difficulties are understood.
I trained as a psychodynamic counsellor at the University of Greenwich, and hold a Post Qualifying Certificate in Relational Counselling from Relate. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am currently completing advanced specialist training in couples psychotherapy at Tavistock Relationships, accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council. My couples work is supported through ongoing clinical supervision with senior practitioners.
Before training as a counsellor, I worked in mental health and arts practice, supporting people to find creative ways to work through complex issues. This continues to inform my approach, including an openness to what may be communicated symbolically and through association rather than just words.
