Myfanwy Champness
Psychodynamic Counsellor
Couples come to therapy for many different reasons, but beneath these, there are often shared themes that reflect how hard it can be to sustain a relationship. You might feel stuck, going round in circles trying to have the same conversation, or there may be something that you need to say but just don't know how. Perhaps your relationship has been suffering for some time, or you are dealing with the fall out of a significant event.
Whatever has brought you here, you likely have a sense that something needs to change, and that is a great starting point. Sometimes, things can feel so muddled that you don't know where to begin, and my aim when I work with couples is to provide a space to do just that. A place where both of you can hear and be heard, explore the patterns in your relationship, and begin to understand how they have developed.
I trained as a psychodynamic counsellor at Wessex Counselling and Psychotherapy, where the diploma is accredited by both the BPC and the BACP, and I am a registered member of the BACP. I am currently completing advanced specialist training in couples psychotherapy at Tavistock Relationships, accredited by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). All of my couples work is conducted under close clinical supervision by senior practitioners at Tavistock Relationships.
Before training as a therapist, I worked in the NHS for over fifteen years, much of that time within children's services. This experience deepened my understanding of the lasting impact of early relationships—particularly with parents and caregivers—on our adult lives. This perspective continues to inform my work, alongside a focus on present-day experiences and dynamics.
